The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: Cannondale 2008 model year "Scalpel" mountain bikes
Units: About 150
Manufacturer: Cannondale Bicycle Corporation, of Bethel, Conn.
Hazard: The frame can break while in use, causing the rider to lose control and suffer injuries from a fall or collision.
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received six reports of frames breaking. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The 2008 model year Scalpel is a cross-country racing mountain bike, made from carbon fiber and aluminum. They were sold in Black/White, Blue/Black and Black. The recall includes the following models:

Sold at: Authorized Cannondale dealers nationwide from October 2007 through December 2007.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the bicycle immediately and contact Cannondale or authorized dealer for a free replacement frame. Consumers have been directly notified.

The recalled children’s and youth helmets violate the mandatory safety standard for bicycle helmets. Particularly, the helmets do not comply with the positional stability and coverage requirements. The helmets can fail to protect the user in the event of a crash, posing a risk of injury or death due to head injury.
The stoves can explode or catch fire, posing a burn and fire hazard to consumers.
The coaster brakes can fail to engage, resulting in the rider losing control, posing a crash hazard.
The pump’s canister can forcefully eject from the base when pressurized, posing a risk of serious injury from impact to the user or bystander.
The left front wheel can detach during use, posing a fall hazard.
The bike’s seat post assembly can break during use, posing fall and injury hazards to the user.

Since the CPSC was established more than 50 years ago, it has worked to ensure the safety of consumer products, which has contributed to a decline in injuries associated with these products.
