Recall Details
Sunrise Medical of Heidelberg, Germany is voluntarily recalling about 70 Spirit 470 3-Wheel Hand Cycles. The recalled hand cycles come in a variety of colors and have "SOPUR" written on both sides of the bodywork. Sunrise Medical dealers nationwide sold these hand cycles from August 2001 to July 2002 for $3,300. They were manufactured in Germany.
There is a small risk that the quick release axles of the rear wheels do not lock correctly. If the quick release axle is not fully and properly engaged, the wheel could become detached while moving. A detached wheel could result in loss of control of the cycle and potential for serious injury or death due to a fall or collision with another object.
Sunrise Medical has received one report in which the quick release failed and the rider suffered minor injuries.
Consumers should stop riding these cycles immediately and contact their local Sunrise Medical dealer for a free repair. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product-related incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. Since the CPSC was established more than 50 years ago, it has worked to ensure the safety of consumer products, which has contributed to a decline in injuries associated with these products.
Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
