PRODUCT: All-Terrain Vehicles - Cannondale Corp., of Bethel, Conn., is voluntarily recalling about 1100 All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). These 2002 and 2003 model year ATVs have "Cannondale" and "Cannibal" on both sides of the bodywork. "Cannondale" appears on the rear fenders and bodywork of the vehicle; "Cannibal" appears roughly inboard of the operator's knee location. Cannondale dealers nationwide sold these ATVs from February 2002 through September 2002 for $7,000. They were manufactured in the USA.
PROBLEM: The front shocks can break apart internally while riding. If this happens the shock halves can separate causing the ATV suspension to fail. The operator can lose control of the ATV, possibly resulting in injury or death.
INCIDENTS/INJURIES: Cannondale Corp. has received 11 reports of these front shocks breaking apart. One consumer has suffered a broken leg.
WHAT TO DO: Consumers should stop riding these ATVs and contact their local Cannondale dealer to schedule an appointment to have the front shocks replaced for free. For more information, contact Cannondale toll free at (877) 357-6686 between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m ET Monday through Friday, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Saturday, and between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. ET Sunday.
Owners of these ATVs were directly notified about this recall.

Additionally, the handlebars pose a laceration hazard, if the child rider’s body or head impacts the handlebars at high speed. ATVs that fail to meet the mandatory safety requirements pose a risk of serious injury or death.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product-related incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. Since the CPSC was established more than 50 years ago, it has worked to ensure the safety of consumer products, which has contributed to a decline in injuries associated with these products.
Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
