The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: 2008 Model Year Mongoose Youth ATVs
Units: About 1,700
Importer: KYMCO USA, of Spartanburg, S.C.
Hazard: A manufacturing defect in the carburetor can cause the throttle to stick open, posing a risk of serious injury or death to the rider.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: This recall involves model year 2008 Mongoose 50cc, 70cc and 90cc Youth ATVs. KYMCO is printed on a label located on the front of the vehicle, and the model name is printed on a label located on each side of the fuel tank.
Sold by: KYMCO dealers nationwide from August 2007 through June 2008 for between $1,700 and $2,100.
Manufactured in: Taiwan
Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ATVs and contact any authorized KYMCO dealer to schedule a free repair. Registered owners were sent direct mail notification of this recall.

The recalled youth ATVs violate the mandatory ATV safety standard. The youth ATVs’ mechanical suspension fails to comply with safety requirements, posing a crash hazard. Additionally, the handlebars pose a laceration hazard, if the child rider’s body or head impacts the handlebars at high speed. ATVs that fail to meet the mandatory safety requirements pose a risk of serious injury or death.
The recalled helmets fail to provide sufficient protection in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury.
The recalled youth ATVs fail to comply with the requirements of the federal mandatory ATV safety standard. The handlebars pose a laceration hazard if the child rider’s body or head impacts the handlebars at a high rate of speed. Additionally, the parking brakes fail to hold, posing a collision hazard. ATVs that fail to meet the mandatory safety requirements pose a risk of serious injury or death.
The recalled accessory heaters can overheat and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.
When the recalled carrier bearings are installed in a Polaris RZR XP Turbo or Turbo S vehicle and the fuel tank expands, the drive shaft can come in contact with the fuel tank, causing the tank to develop a hole or crack. This can cause the fuel tank to leak gasoline, posing fire and burn hazards.
The high voltage cables on the motor controller unit can be loose, causing the cable to arc or overheat while in use, posing fire and crash hazards and risk of serious injury.

Since the CPSC was established more than 50 years ago, it has worked to ensure the safety of consumer products, which has contributed to a decline in injuries associated with these products.
Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
