WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announces the following recall in voluntary cooperation with the firm below. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of product: Professional Hedge Trimmers

Units: 59,200

Manufacturer: Shindaiwa Inc., of Tualatin, Ore.

Hazard: The fuel cap on the hedge trimmer can leak, posing a fire and burn hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: None.

Description: The hedge trimmers have red engine covers, a red fuel cap and a label on the recoil starter that reads "Professional Shindaiwa." The recall includes all model DH 230/231 and HT 230/231 with serial numbers up to 3080000. The serial numbers are printed on a nameplate on the engine cover.

Sold at: Shindaiwa dealers nationwide from August 1997 to August 2003 for between $370 and $450 depending on the model.

Manufactured in: Japan.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the hedge trimmer and return the red fuel cap to the dealer for a replacement cap.

Increasing Injuries Prompt Black & Decker to Reannounce Recall of Trimmers/Edgers Due to Laceration and Burn Hazards

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc., of Towson, Md., is voluntarily recalling about 200,000 Black & Decker GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmer/Edgers. The trimmer/edger's spool, spool cap and pieces of trimmer string can come loose during use and become airborne projectiles, posing a serious laceration hazard to the user, as well as bystanders. The trimmer/edgers can also overheat, posing a burn hazard to consumers.

Black & Decker Recalls Trimmers/Edgers Due to Laceration Hazard from Projectiles
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc., of Towson, Md., is voluntarily recalling about 202,000 Black & Decker GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmer/Edgers. The trimmer/edger's spool, spool cap and pieces of trimmer string can come loose during use and become airborne projectiles, posing a laceration hazard to the user as well as bystanders. Troy-Bilt String Trimmer Sold at Lowe's Recalled for Laceration Hazard
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), MTD Southwest Inc., of Tempe, Ariz., is voluntarily recalling about 20,000 Troy-Bilt 4-Cycle Gasoline String Trimmers. The blade that trims the excess string of these weed trimmers can detach from the plastic shield covering the trimmer head. The blade can be thrown outward, hitting the user or bystander, resulting in a laceration.

CPSC, Shindaiwa Inc. Announce Recall of Gas-Powered Hedge Trimmers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Shindaiwa Inc., of Tualatin, Ore., is voluntarily recalling about 25,000 Shindaiwa Gas-Powered Professional Hedge Trimmers. The heat from the hedge trimmer's muffler can damage the fuel tank, cause a fuel leak and create a fire hazard.
