CPSC To Ban Firecrackers--Effective June 1974

Release Date: October 06, 2011

And the Commission said it will launch a comprehensive nationwide campaign warning consumers of the dangers of fireworks and outlining safer uses of those devices which will be on sale.

The action extends federal regulation of fireworks beyond those devices - such as M-80's and cherry bombs - which were previously banned by the Food and Drug Administration which formerly had authority over the Hazardous Substances Act.

A Commission spokesman said a notice covering the legal and technical aspects of the announcement will be published in the Federal Register within the next three weeks, to take effect in June, 1974.

The Commission estimates that 6,500 consumers were treated in hospital emergency rooms last year for fireworks--related injuries, many of those of a serious nature. The bulk of those involved children under 15 years of age.
