The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued an update today on the recall of a quarter of a million sheer chiffon skirts that failed to meet the regulation under the Flammable Fabrics Act. Based on a number of inquiries to the agency's hotline that show confusion about the scope of the skirt recall, CPSC is updating its recall to clarify information for importers, retailers, and consumers.
The recalled garments are certain two-layer skirts made from 100 percent rayon or a rayon/cotton blend with the following characteristics and label information:
Skirt characteristics: Two layer skirt with sheer chiffon fabric over a gauze lining. These summer and fall-line skirts are long and full with elastic waist bands, which may also have drawstrings at the waist.
General Label Information:
- Made in India.
- 100 percent rayon or 65 percent rayon (viscose)/35 percent cotton.
- Hand Wash Separately in Cold Water or Dry Clean Only.
The current recall does not include:
1. "Broomstick" skirts
2. Dresses
3. Pants
4. Scarves
5. Single-layer garments
6. Garments made from 100 percent cotton.
CPSC, which has received reports of additional retailers and importers of the recalled skirt not listed in the original press release, is following up on these reports to extend the scope of the recall as necessary.
In response to the recall, CPSC has also received several reports of skirts catching on fire and burn injuries that are under investigation.
About the U.S. CPSC
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product-related incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. Since the CPSC was established more than 50 years ago, it has worked to ensure the safety of consumer products, which has contributed to a decline in injuries associated with these products.
Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
