Commissioner Trumka Urges You to Beware of Dangerous Baby Products Sold Online; Report them to Saferproducts.gov
Baby products continue to violate safety rules, putting babies at serious risk of injury or death. This week, CPSC recalled two dangerous products that highlight this ongoing issue.
First, we announced recalls of multiple HONEYJOY products that posed a suffocation hazard when they converted from highchairs to inclined sleepers.[1] Inclined sleepers have not been allowed on the market for years because inclined sleep poses a risk of death to babies.[2] Yet, we still find them on the market.
CPSC also announced the recall of baby bath seats that can tip over while in use, posing a serious drowning risk to infants. There are clear safety rules to prevent this, and these products were recalled for not meeting those safety requirements.[3]
Unfortunately, this is part of a troubling pattern. Over the past 12 months, CPSC has announced recalls of approximately 150,000 units of baby products based on violations of existing safety rules. Too many companies continue to produce and sell products that violate federal safety laws, putting lives at risk. The recalled products highlighted today were made in China and sold exclusively online, which fits a pattern of many recalled products in this space.
CPSC will continue to police the market and hold companies accountable. Our eSAFE (Ecommerce, Surveillance, Analysis, Field, and Enforcement) team plays a critical role in this work. They identify and address online listings for products that violate federal safety laws or otherwise pose a safety threat. Their work is essential to CPSC’s mission and helps keep unsafe products from ever reaching your home in the first place.
But enforcement alone is not enough. It’s companies’ duty not to sell products that break safety standards, and it’s high time for them to step up and take that obligation seriously. Parents and caregivers should not have to worry about the safety of a product purchased for their child in America.
If you encounter a hazardous product, report it on SaferProducts.gov. Your reports help us protect Americans from dangerous products.
Faithfully,
Commissioner Richard L. Trumka Jr.
