The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today that Gund Inc. of Edison, N.J., will pay a civil penalty of $150,000 to resolve charges that its Gundmobile musical crib mobiles failed to comply with CPSC safety regulations. CPSC also charged that Gund failed to report the problem to the agency in a timely manner as required by law.
The Gundmobiles musical mobiles have a curved plastic arm, which suspends a music box over the crib. Plush toys hang from the music box on plastic rods that rotate as the music plays. From May 30, 1991 through July 1992 Gund sold Gundmobiles despite information from independent test labs and its own analysis that showed the hook suspending the plastic rods could break dropping the plastic rods, plush toys, and broken pieces into the crib. Gund also received many complaints from consumers about hook breakage. No injuries were reported. While Gund stopped sale and redesigned the mobiles in July 1992, the company failed to report the breakage problem to CPSC until January 1993.
Although the company agreed to settle this matter, Gund denied that it violated the law.
