LP GAS INSPECTION PROGRAM

Release Date: September 15, 1986

The Consumer Product Safety Commission encourages the implementation of the ""Gas Check"" Program initiated by the National LP Gas Association (NLPGA), (312-986-4300). This program was developed by the Association for use by the LP gas industry which provides service to millions of residences nationwide.

"Gas Check" is a voluntary consumer education and safety inspection of LP gas systems. There may be a nominal fee paid by homeowners for the inspection. CPSC currently is carrying out a priority project on gas heating systems that is addressing safety problems associated.with both natural gas and LP gas. The Commission believes that "Gas Check" will serve to complement its gas heating systems project.

Commission staff are working with industry to improve a number of voluntary safety standards for gas-fired home appliances to reduce the risk of accidental fires and explosions associated with these appliances and to reduce the potential for carbon monoxide poisonings. CPSC has proposed improvements to these standards that would be complemented by the "Gas Check" inspection program. Consumers who are interested in obtaining more information about "Gas Check" should contact their local LP gas supplier. Consumers who wish to report accidents associated with the use of LP gas are encouraged by CPSC to call in this information on the Commission's toll-free hotline number 800-638-CPSC. A teletype- writer number for the hearing impaired is 800-633-8270, or write to:

Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
