“The Laundress” Fabric Conditioners Recalled for Ethylene Oxide, Known Cause of Cancer

March 31, 2023

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Laundress Fabric Conditioners and should seek a refund according to the instructions here.

CPSC announced today that The Laundress Fabric Conditioners may contain ethylene oxide, a known cause of cancer.  This is the second recall of Laundress products since December 2022, when the company recalled an array of laundry and household cleaning products due to bacterial contamination.

According to EPA, long-term exposure to ethylene oxide can damage the brain and nervous system, and EPA has concluded that exposure to ethylene oxide increases the risk of lymphoid cancer and breast cancer.  EPA provides additional information about the risks of exposure to ethylene oxide at low concentrations over long periods of time.

Manufacturers must do more to ensure that their products are safe, and CPSC must do its part to hold them accountable.  CPSC works every day to ensure that American consumers are safe from unreasonable risks posed by household products.
