Statement of Commissioner Douglas Dziak: Goodbye, Farewell and Amen
Ecclesiastes says there is a time for everything. After four and a half years at the Consumer Product Safety Commission—and three in the Senate—it is time for me to move on from public service. It has been a privilege and an honor to serve, but with the expiration of my term approaching, I will soon be stepping down from my position as a Commissioner.
During my time in public service, I have had the good fortune to serve both as a Commissioner and as a senior U.S. Senate staffer. As a working-class kid from Ohio, I realize how lucky I am.
I owe many thank-yous. Any such list will inevitably be incomplete, but I want to recognize my colleagues —Dana Smullen, my Chief of Staff, and Lee Dunn, my Chief Counsel —whose professionalism and dedication helped move the Commission’s important work forward. Your efforts will have a lasting impact, and I am grateful you were willing to serve with me.
I would be remiss not to acknowledge the late Senators Mike Enzi and George Voinovich, the statesmen whose mentorship instilled in me a deep respect for public service and principled leadership. Their approach has always guided my work. The lessons I learned from both remain my North Star.
Finally, I must thank my friend and colleague, Acting Chairman Peter Feldman, for his leadership, guidance, and unwavering commitment to the Commission. Working alongside Peter has been an honor. I am proud of the work we have done together to improve this Commission, and I leave knowing it is in excellent hands.
To the Commission’s career staff: the mission is as vital as ever, and I am confident that you will carry it forward with continued dedication. I sought to meet as many of you as I could—either at headquarters or in the field—to express my appreciation for the work you do.
To my family, especially Leigh Anne—thank you for your patience and constant support. You have been my rock.
My priorities for the Commission were born of personal experience. From my years as a swimming instructor and lifeguard, I know the importance of water safety. I am proud that, in furtherance of this goal, the CPSC announced a first-of-its-kind recall of more than five million above-ground swimming pools that had resulted in the drowning deaths of at least nine children.
Another of my priorities was reducing injuries among older Americans. I am similarly proud of the work the Commission did to improve the safety of adult portable bed rails (APBRs). Earlier this year, the Commission announced a record recall of almost 95,000 units of violative APBRs, and I am heartened that the Commission continues to prioritize senior safety.
Finally, for the safety of all Americans, the Commission has increased its focus on e-commerce, including through recent litigation. E-commerce represents a growing portion of consumer sales, and focusing on these transactions—especially those involving imported products—will enhance consumer protection.
I leave the Commission knowing that the work in these areas, and many others, will continue for the benefit of all Americans.
