Commissioner Dziak Leaves CPSC Stronger Than He Found It
Today, I join in recognizing the departure of my friend and colleague, Commissioner Douglas Dziak, from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
I want to thank Doug personally for his leadership, his tireless service to the Commission, and his many years as a trusted chief counsel in my office, prior to becoming a commissioner. Above all, I am grateful for his personal friendship, which has endured and strengthened through years of public service together.
Doug’s contributions to safeguarding our most vulnerable, including older Americans and young children around water, far exceed those of any other commissioner in recent memory. His leadership was pivotal in securing the largest above-ground pool recall in the agency’s history, addressing a long-known drowning hazard that had tragically claimed young lives. Under Doug’s leadership, the Commission finalized a first-of-its-kind federal standard to improve the safety of infant neck floats, a product category linked to multiple drowning deaths and near-fatal incidents. Doug’s efforts as a staff member, and later as a commissioner, resulted both in the establishment of a mandatory federal safety standard for adult portable bedrails, and a record recall of violative products, saving countless lives.
Doug’s tenure coincided with a period of significant agency modernization, during which the Commission rose to meet the complex challenges of the day—including the rapid evolution of e-commerce and the growing threat to American consumers from foreign adversaries such as the People’s Republic of China. He was instrumental in our landmark lawsuit against Amazon, in which the Commission held the e-commerce giant to be a “distributor” under the Consumer Product Safety Act when operating its Fulfilled by Amazon program. Doug was also a driving force behind our investigations into Shein and Temu, ensuring that foreign-owned e-commerce platforms are held to the same safety obligations as their domestic competitors.
His work consistently reflected a commitment to efficiency, accountability, and measurable results. That ethic has left the CPSC stronger, more agile, and better prepared to meet emerging risks than it was when he arrived.
I thank Doug for his service to our nation, to this Commission, and to me personally. I wish him the very best in all that lies ahead.
