Statement of Commissioner Peter A. Feldman on STURDY Act Enforcement
Six months ago today, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standard for clothing storage units took effect. This historic standard sets clear guidelines to protect children from the unreasonable risk of tip-over-related death and establishes new obligations for the furniture industry.
Congress passed the bipartisan Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth (STURDY) Act in 2022. In doing so, it provided clear direction: CPSC must act to protect children from deadly tip-overs.
Over the past six months, manufacturers and retailers should have been coming into compliance as they produce furniture to meet the new safety standard. I expect CPSC to enforce the law vigorously going forward.
