Commissioner Mary T. Boyle Statement on CPSC Letter Urging Compliance with Voluntary Safety Standards for Micromobility Devices

December 21, 2022

I am deeply concerned about the serious risks of injury, death, and property damage linked to lithium-ion battery fires in e-bikes and other micromobility devices, and I have been urging the Commission to take decisive action. CPSC’s December 20th letter calling on e-mobility manufacturers to comply with UL safety standards is a step in the right direction. Failure to comply has consequences. Corrective actions include recalls, and I expect to see enforcement increase following the issuance of this letter.

If e-bikes and other micromobility devices are going to live up to their potential for advancing the green economy and offering innovative forms of recreation, it is imperative that we pay attention to safety first. CPSC is tasked with protecting consumers, and we must continue to deliver on that essential mission.
