Statement of Commissioner Douglas Dziak on President Trump’s Closing the de minimis Exemption
President Trump’s Executive Order regarding Chinese imports closes the de minimis loophole that allowed Chinese produced goods to enter the United States without inspection. Last fall, Acting Chairman Feldman and I urged the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission staff to make Chinese e-commerce a priority citing de minimis shipments. The President’s action addresses a significant concern that under this loophole, Chinese e-commerce platforms and their manufacturers are able to skirt U.S. consumer product safety laws that protect American families from dangerous consumer products and disadvantage companies that follow the law.
