Statement of CPSC Chair Alex D. Hoehn-Saric on Fisher-Price and Kids2 Rockers Warnings
After multiple infant deaths associated with Fisher-Price and Kids2 rockers, the CPSC has issued warnings to provide parents and caregivers with important information as they make decisions about caring for their children and to remind them never to use rockers or other inclined products for infant sleep.
Infant and child safety is a top priority for the CPSC. The agency has been investigating incidents and analyzing the data related to these products. And this work will continue.
While our investigations into these incidents are underway, we wanted to alert parents and caregivers about safe sleep practices for infants – particularly as they relate to the use of rockers.
Your infant’s sleep environment should be the safest place in your home, so we want to remind parents and caregivers: the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard, without blankets, pillows, or other items. Babies should never be unsupervised or unrestrained in rockers, gliders, soothers, or swings.
I also want to highlight the new rule on infant sleep products that will require that sleep products have a sleep surface angle of 10 degrees or less, and that all sleep products conform to the existing bassinet, crib, or play yard standard. The rule goes into effect on June 23, and will be an important step to help parents and caregivers keep babies safer. The CPSC will aggressively enforce the rule in order to protect the most vulnerable among us, our children.
We are also asking for the public’s help by reporting any incidents with nursery or other consumer products to CPSC at SaferProducts.gov.
