WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Nancy Sales Co. Inc. of Chelsea, Mass., is recalling about 4,100 bean bag crab toys. The toys' seams can separate and allow plastic pellets to be released, presenting an aspiration hazard to young children.

The bean bag crab is made from red velour fabric. Its body, measuring about 4 inches wide, is filled with plastic pellets and has plastic black eyes. Attached to the crab's body are five pairs of stuffed legs that extend the crab to about 10 inches long. The crab has a sewn-on label that reads in part, "NANCO ... CHELSEA, MA...MADE IN CHINA." A tag attached to the toy at the time of sale describes the characteristics and habitat of the "Rock Crab."
Arcade and gift shops nationwide sold the toys from January 1997 through October 1997 for about $6.
Consumers should take these toys away from children immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information about this recall, consumers should call Nancy Sales Co. Inc. at (800) 626-2947 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product-related incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. Since the CPSC was established more than 50 years ago, it has worked to ensure the safety of consumer products, which has contributed to a decline in injuries associated with these products.
Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
