CPSC Chooses Pittle As Vice Chairman

Commissioner R. David Pittle has been elected to serve a one-year term as Vice Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Pittle, one of the original members of the five-member regulatory Commission, is in the fourth year of a five-year term. He succeeds as Vice Chairman, Mrs. Constance Newman who recently joined the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as an Assistant Secretary. The Commission's Vice Chairmanship is subject to election annually by the Commission. The Chairman is designated by the President.

Pittle served from 1971 to 1973 as President of the Alliance for Consumer Protection in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was a member of numerous consumer advisory committees to both government and industry. He was an assistant professor of electrical engineering and public affairs at Carnegie-Mellon University from 1969 to 1973 where he conducted research in the area of product safety. From 1963 to 1969, he taught electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin.

Pittle was born in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Montgomery Junior College and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in electrical engineering at the University of Maryland and a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.

Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product-related incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products has contributed to a decline in the rate of injuries associated with consumer products over the past 50 years. 

Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
