Description:

Washington, D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Peg Perego U.S.A., Inc., Fort Wayne, Indiana, announces a voluntary consumer repair program for its "Avanti" model stroller.

In at least 13 reported instances, an infant seated in the stroller has put his mouth over a metal wire guide that runs parallel to the stroller's arm rest. The child's chin has been caught in the one-inch space between the wire guide and the arm rest, resulting in lacerations to the mouth, and in some cases, loosening of teeth or loss of teeth.

The Perego "Avanti" stroller sold for approximately $99 nationwide. 11,344 units were distributed by the firm between January 1, 1986 and December 15, 1986.

Peg Perego U.S.A., Inc. will provide a free repair kit that will close the gap where children's chins have been caught. The repair kit will not interfere with the stroller's reversible handle feature.

To obtain the repair kit and installation instructions, consumers should call Peg Perego toll-free at 1-800-824-4000. Consumers may also contact the firm by writing to Peg Perego, U.S.A., Inc., 3625 Independence Drive, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The name "Avanti" was used on two stroller models. Only strollers with wire guides and the name "Avanti"' on the front bumper are affected by this repair program.
