Commissioner Constance B. Newman Elected Vice Chairman

Commissioner Constance B. Newman has been elected Vice Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Ms. Newman was selected by the Commissioners to succeed Dr. Lawrence M. Kushner as Vice Chairman, a position which is subject to election annually by the Commission.

Ms. Newman was Director of VISTA before her six-year appointment by the President as Commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Prior to joining VISTA in 1971, Ms. Newman was Special Assistant to Health, Education and Welfare Secretary Elliot L. Richardson.

From 1967 to 1969, Ms. Newman worked for the Office of Economic Opportunity. Previously, she was a staff member of the National Advisory Committee on Civil Disorder.

Ms. Newman holds a law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School and graduated with honors from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

In 1969, Ms. Newman was named one of the Outstanding Young Women in America. She was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Bates College in 1972. Ms. Newman is listed in Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in American Politics.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission was activated in May 1973, as an independent Federal regulatory agency with jurisdiction over some 10,000 consumer products.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury or death associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product-related incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products has contributed to a decline in the rate of injuries associated with consumer products over the past 50 years. 

Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
