WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Central Sprinkler announced today the nationwide recall of approximately 8.4 million Omega brand fire sprinklers manufactured since 1982 by Central Sprinkler Corp. and its subsidiary, Central Sprinkler Co., of Lansdale, Pa. CPSC alleges that Omegas are defective and could likely fail in a fire. This recall announcement follows the resolution of the lawsuit filed by the Commission staff against these companies on March 3, 1998.

CPSC alleges that, on average, between 30 and 40 percent of Omegas removed from various locations across the country for testing failed to activate as they should. In some buildings, all Omegas tested failed to activate. CPSC is warning consumers that they are at risk of bodily injury or death and should have Omegas replaced as soon as possible. CPSC is urging consumers to take immediate action to determine whether the buildings where they live and work are equipped with Omegas, and if so, to call the Omega Sprinkler Recall Hotline to participate in the recall. Properly functioning fire sprinklers save lives when a fire occurs. With the Omega sprinklers, this line of defense may not be there when it is needed most.

CPSC has received reports of Omega sprinklers not functioning in 17 fires. At least four persons suffered injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation. Over $4.3 million in property damage has been reported. The fires occurred between 1990 and the present in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. In some cases, the sprinkler directly above the fire failed to operate.

Omega fire sprinklers are installed in homes, schools, hospitals, dormitories, nursing homes, prisons, offices, hotels and other buildings as well as federal buildings, including the Smithsonian Museums and the U.S. Capitol, which house many of the country's historical artifacts. Omegas have been or are being removed from many state and federal buildings, including the White House. As part of the settlement agreement, Central has asked Underwriters Laboratories to withdraw its listing of approval for all Omega brand fire sprinklers.

Consumers themselves should be able to determine whether their homes or other buildings are equipped with Omega fire sprinklers. On most models, consumers will be able to see three flat round metal disks stacked one above the other with a small space between each disk. Consumers should not attempt to unscrew the sprinkler or shut down their sprinkler system to determine if they have Omegas. Central will send consumers a packet of information to help them identify the sprinklers involved.

Central is offering consumers free replacement glass bulb fire sprinklers and reimbursement toward the cost of having Omega sprinklers removed and replaced. CPSC routinely requires companies to pay the full costs associated with recalls. In this case, Central's reported financial condition reveals that its ability to pay the cost of replacing the Omega sprinklers is limited. Consumers are urged to call the Omega Sprinkler Recall Hotline, available 24 hours a day, at (800) 927-5291 or to access the Omega recall website at omegarecall.com to participate in the recall. For consumers to get any monetary reimbursement for installation costs, they must submit a proof of claim and release to Central postmarked by August 1, 1999. Consumers are urged to take immediate action and call today.

Since Omegas may not operate in a fire, it is particularly important that consumers have at least one fully operational smoke detector on every floor of their home, especially near bedrooms. To ensure that the detector's batteries are working, test the detector every month. Consumers also should have a well-defined and rehearsed escape plan and an alternate escape plan in the event of a fire.

CPSC, Universal Candle Co. Announce Recall of Halloween Pumpkin Tealight Candles Sold at Bath & Body Works

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Universal Candle Co., of China, is voluntarily recalling about 21,000 Halloween pumpkin tealight candles sold at Bath & Body Works. The candles can burn with a high flame, presenting fire and burn hazards to consumers.

A Bath & Body Works store received one report of a candle generating a high flame. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled tealight candle has an orange pumpkin face, with yellow eyes, nose and mouth and a green stem. Purple outlines the features on the pumpkin face. The wick is placed above the pumpkin's nose. The candle is contained in an aluminum base. A label on the base of the candle reads in part, "Specially made in China for Bath & Body Works." Bath & Body Works stores nationwide sold the candles throughout September 1999 for about $1.

Consumers should stop using the candles immediately, and return the candles to any Bath & Body Works store for a full refund and a $10 gift certificate per customer. Description:

This recall involves natural gas or propane Lennox and Superior brand fireplaces with the following model and serial numbers. Lennox model numbers include ELDV, LDV, MLBV-40, MLDVT, MPB, MPD, MPDP, RHAP54, and SYM. Superior model numbers include SDV, SLDVT and SLBV. Serial number have 10 digits starting with 6412D4, 6412E4, 6412F4, 6412G4, 6412H4, 6412D7, 6412E7, 6412F7, 6412G7 or 6412H7. The model, serial number and the Lennox or Superior brand names are printed on the rating plate located in the control box area of the fireplace.  

 
Remedy:

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled gas fireplaces, turn off the gas to the fireplace and contact Lennox Hearth Products for a free inspection and replacement of the leaking gas connector.  Lennox Hearth Products and its distributors are contacting purchasers directly.

Lennox Hearth Products has received eight reports of gas connectors leaking in fireplaces. No injuries have been reported.

WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Whirlpool Corp., of Benton Harbor, Mich., is voluntarily recalling about 1.8 million microwave-hood combinations. These units can overheat and catch fire.

Whirlpool has received seven reports of fires involving these microwave- hood combinations. These incidents have resulted in extensive property damage. No injuries have been reported.

These are microwave oven and exhaust fan hood combination units that are installed above ranges. They were sold under the Whirlpool®, KitchenAid® and Kenmore® brand names. They have serial numbers that begin with XC. Open the door to locate the serial and model numbers. Department, electronics, home and appliance stores, as well as builder and remodelers, sold the microwave-hood combinations nationwide from January 1998 through September 2001 for between $249 and $749.

Consumers with recalled microwave-hood combinations should immediately stop using them and disconnect the units by unplugging them. Consumers can call Whirlpool Corp. for a free repair. WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Cisco Systems Inc., of San Jose, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 95,000 power adapters for replacement. These power adapters are used with certain Cisco Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Routers. The adapters can overheat and melt a hole through the housing, posing a fire hazard. In addition, the exposed wires pose a shock hazard.

Cisco has received one report of an adapter overheating. No injuries or property damage have been reported.

This recall involves power adapters with the part number "34-0949- 02." The part number is located on the adapter label, below the Cisco Systems logo. The power adapter is a small, black AC unit, which establishes a connection between the router and an electrical outlet. The adapters are used with the ADSL Routers that provide secure, high- speed Internet access for small businesses, small offices, home offices and corporate teleworkers. The power adapters were shipped with the following ADSL routers:

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Lawn-Boy Inc., of Bloomington, Minn., is recalling about 90,000 Lawn-Boy power mowers. Stress cracks can develop in the mower's fuel tank, allowing gasoline to leak and posing a risk of fire and burn injuries.

Lawn-Boy received nearly 400 reports of fuel tanks on these mowers leaking, and one report of a fire. No injuries or property damage were reported.

The recalled Lawn-Boy SilverPro and GoldPro Series are walk-behind, 21- inch mowers powered by 2-cycle Duraforce engines. "Duraforce" is written on the top of the recoil starter. A decal on the right rear of the mower's housing has one of the following model numbers: 10247, 10252, 10323, 10324, 10424, 10550 or 10552. The decal also has a serial number starting with "21."

Lawn-Boy dealers, and department and home center stores sold these mowers from December 2000 through November 2001 for between $300 and $600.

Consumers should stop using these recalled mowers immediately and contact Lawn-Boy to arrange for a free replacement fuel tank to be installed. WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Compaq Computer Corp., of Houston, Texas, is voluntarily recalling for replacement about 594,000 AC adapters* used with certain Compaq notebook computers in the U.S. This is part of a worldwide recall of more than 1.4 million AC adapters. These AC adapters can overheat, posing a fire hazard.

Compaq has received five reports of fire that were contained to the cases of the AC adapters. No injuries were reported.

This recall involves AC adapters with the model series number "PPP003SD," " PPP003" and "PP2012," which is located directly under "Compaq Computer Corporation" on the AC adapter label. The AC adapters were sold individually and with the following notebook computers:

WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Darice Inc., of Strongsville, Ohio, is voluntarily recalling 60,000 wooden candle holders. When the candle burns down to the bottom of the wick it can set the candle holder on fire, which poses fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Darice Inc. has not received any reports of incidents. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries.

The recalled candle holders are constructed of unfinished wood and are designed to be painted or decorated. The candle holders, which are intended to support taper candles, come in five different shapes and sizes.

The Darice wholesale catalog, independent craft stores nationwide, including Pat Catan's Craft Centers and Ben Franklin Crafts, and Wal- Mart Stores, sold the candle holders from October 2000 through November 2001 for about $2.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Alco Industries Inc., of Edison, N.J., is voluntarily announcing the recall of 75,000 water fountains with candle holders. The tea candles on the water fountains can flare up, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Alco Industries has received two reports of candles flaring up, including two consumers who suffered burn injuries.

The recalled water fountains have a black base and two tiers of rocks over which water flows. The decorative rocks come in various shapes and colors. Two candles are perched above the fountain, set in black candle holders, and lit behind a painted glass cover. A sticker on the bottom of the fountain reads, "Made in China." The "Submersible Pump" attached to the bottom of the fountain reads in part, "Jebo" and "Made in China"

Mass Retailers nationwide sold these water fountain candle sets from February 2001 through October 2001 for between $10 and $20.

Consumers should stop using the tea candles immediately and return the water fountain set to the store where purchased for a full refund or a replacement of the tea candles. WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Value City and Schottenstein stores, of Columbus, Ohio, are voluntarily recalling about 2,300 children's gel candle kits. When burned, the gel candle can melt the plastic candleholders included with the kit, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

CPSC has received two reports of consumers claiming the plastic candleholder melted and started a fire. One report involved substantial damage to the consumer's home, and a consumer reportedly suffered burns to his hands and feet. The other report involved minor damage to furniture.

The Gel Candles kit includes four bags of gel chips in bright colors, wicks, glitter, two glass holders, and two plastic candleholders. The candleholders are in the shapes of a bumblebee and a dragonfly, or a tulip and a daisy. The gel is scented in fruit flavors. The kits have model numbers "3041" or "3042" written on the box. Other writing on the box includes, "Express Ways!™ Gel Candles." "Scent- sational Colored Gel!" and "AGES 8 AND OLDER."

Value City and Schottenstein discount stores nationwide sold these gel candle kits from July 2001 through December 2001 for about $4.

Consumers should stop using these candles immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund.
