CPSC, Tap Enterprises Inc. Recalls Air Compressors Due to Fire and Electrocution Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the manufacturers named below, today announced voluntary recalls of the following consumer products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Mini 2-Galllon Pancake Air Compressors

Units: About 11,300

Importer: Tap Enterprises, Inc., dba Cummins Industrial Tools, of Spring Hill, Kansas

Hazard: An undersized power cord can overheat and pose a fire hazard. In addition, improper assembly of the power cord strain relief component and improper routing of internal conductors can cause a shock hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 40 reports of compressors failing to work, including two incidents of smoke and fire. One incident resulted in $30,000 worth of property damage to a stand-alone garage. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The mini-pancake air compressors were sold with yellow, blue, gray or silver-painted tanks. Item #2112 and "CUMMINS INDUSTRIAL TOOLS, AIR COMPRESSOR (OILESS), 110V.60Hz, 2 Gallon, Made in China" can be found on the motor housing.

Sold Through: Mobile merchant sales, Web sites, and newspaper advertisements nationwide from June 2004 through March 2006 for about $50.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the 2-gallon mini compressors immediately and contact Cummins for a refund of the purchase price including shipping.
