CPSC Executive Director - Frederick Barrett Resigns - To Return To Private Industry

Mr. Barrett, who joined the Commission on December 17, 1973, said he will resume his career in private industry. Barrett said he believes he has "now fulfilled my deeply- felt obligation to public service and made a personal contribution to a country I owe so much."

He said he "accepted the challenge" to become the Commission's first Executive Director because of the tremendous opportunities the Commission faced in dealing with the problem of "millions of innocent Americans who were being injured, maimed and killed by consumer products at a time when consumer awareness was only beginning to emerge."

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury or death associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product-related incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products has contributed to a decline in the rate of injuries associated with consumer products over the past 50 years. 

Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
