Bedside Sleepers

Final Rule: Jan. 15, 2014

Effective Date: July 15, 2014

Bedside sleepers, have a rigid frame assembly that may be combined with a fabric or mesh, that is secured to an adult bed to provide a sleeping environment for newborns and infants to sleep close by an adult without being in the adult bed.  Most bedside sleepers are multi-mode, and can be converted into bassinets and/or play yards.

The federal standard incorporates current voluntary standard provisions including requirements for minimum side height, and tests for product disengagement, fabric-sided enclosed openings, and misassembly of bedside sleeper accessories.  The federal requirements for bedside sleepers also enhance the current ASTM voluntary standard by adding a requirement that bedside sleepers be tested to the most recent bassinet standard in 16 C.F.R part 1218.
