WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Sequoia Wood Burning Fireplaces

Units: About 1,300

Manufacturer: CFM Corp. of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

Hazard: Due to insufficient insulation or a missing weld, some of these fireplaces could pose a fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: Only models EWF30, EWF36, and EWF36A are affected by this recall. The recalled fireplaces are 400 or 700 pound steel plate wood-burning fireplaces with the trade name "Sequoia." The fireplaces measure 30-inches-wide or 36-inches-wide, have doors which seal them and are designed for installation in openings in the walls of homes that connect to chimneys. Affected model and serial numbers are:

The name "CFM Corporation" and the model and serial number are located on the rating plate at the bottom right corner of each fireplace

Manufactured In: Canada and the United States

Sold at: Authorized Vermont Castings dealers in Canada and the United States from January 1, 2003 through mid-April, 2006 for about $2,200 for the EWF30 and about $3,000 for the EWF36 and EWF36A.

Remedy: The firm is out of business and a remedy is no longer available.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), CFM Corp. of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, is voluntarily recalling about 1,300 Sequoia Wood Burning Fireplaces. Due to insufficient insulation or a missing weld, some of these fireplaces could pose a fire hazard.

CPSC Warns Of Carbon Monoxide Hadard With Oil/Wood Combination Furnaces

CPSC believes the units have demonstrated a pattern of weld failure that could allow carbon monoxide to escape and be drawn into the home. Carbon monoxide can cause headaches, nausea, and lead to death.

Repair Program Set For Energy Saving Device

Excessively hot chimney temperatures could cause the air damper to close unexpectedly and force smoke or flames back into the room. According to the Chim-A-Lator Company, such a heat build-up is caused primarily by overfueling fireplaces, burning dangerous materials, or failing to have the chimney cleaned.

Glass Doors On Wood Heaters Recalled

The Jackes Evans Manufacturing Company in St. Louis, Missouri, is recalling the glass doors on approximately 1,000 wood-burning heaters. CPSC reported that the glass can break, permitting live sparks to escape into the living area.
