CPSC Hosting a Workshop for Survey on Usage and Functionality of Smoke Alarms and CO Alarms in Households
CPSC is hosting a free Workshop for Survey on Usage and Functionality of Smoke Alarms and CO Alarms in Households from 8am to 5pm EST at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, 4330 East West Highway, Hearing Room 420, Bethesda, MD 20814.
CPSC will be conducting a national census (or representative in-home survey) on the prevalence and characteristics of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms in the near future. The Research Foundation, the research affiliate of NFPA, has been contracted by CPSC to facilitate the workshop to gather feedback from stakeholder groups for this planned survey. Stakeholder groups include the fire service, enforcers/AHJs, public educators, researchers, equipment manufacturers, standards developers, and others. The feedback gathered will help inform the questions and methodology of the survey as well as how it is communicated (i.e. what are the really important pieces of data that need to be gathered and included in the overall data set).
The first part of the day will include a review of previous work, on-going relevant work, data gaps, human behavior changes/societal changes that influence safety behaviors, perception of CO alarms, and changes in smoke alarm listing and installation standards. Then, the workshop participants will be broken into smaller groups to discuss the key areas and topics that they feel are needed as part of the survey.
