In a report submitted to Congress, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Richard 0. Simpson today determined that 0.5 percent level of lead in paint is "safe" and should continue to be permitted as the maximum lead content in household paints.

There were an estimated 5,575,000 household and personal property fires in the US in the year ending April 1974. This figure is part of a fire survey sponsored jointly by the CPSC and the Commerce Department's National Bureau of Standards.
