Welcome to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Podcast for September 8th, 2006.
This week’s podcast includes an update on recent recalls, including Olympus film cameras, Leapfrog Learn-Around Activity Centers, and Atico Patio Umbrellas.
First up -- Olympus has expanded its March 2006 Recall of Overheating Infinity Film Cameras Olympus is recalling an about 24,000 additional cameras.
A defect with the flash circuit in these cameras can cause it to smoke and overheat when the camera is turned on. This poses a possible burn hazard to consumers.
Olympus Imaging America Inc. has received 21 reports of camera or flash circuitry overheating in the U.S. with no reports of injuries.
The original recall announced March 14, 2006 included the Infinity Twin, AF-1 Twin, Infinity Zoom 200 series, AZ 200 series, and Quantary Infinity Zoom 222 Olympus-brand 35mm film cameras. Olympus has now added the Infinity Zoom 76 and the Promaster Infinity Twin model cameras to the recall.
They were sold at department, electronic and camera stores, and mail-order retailers nationwide from January 1989 through December 1995 for between $220 and $365.
Consumers should stop using these cameras and contact Olympus for information on receiving a free repair or, if necessary, replacement.

In other recall news, LeapFrog Enterprises Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 186,000 Learn-Around™ Playground Activity Centers.
A child’s arm can become caught in the activity center’s plastic tube, posing a risk of injury to children. LeapFrog has received 145 reports of children’s arms becoming caught in the plastic tube, resulting in 54 reports of minor scratches and bruises.
The Learn-Around Playground is a multi-colored, plastic musical activity center for young children ages 6 to 36 months. “Leap Frog Baby” is printed on the activity center.
They were sold at department stores and toy stores nationwide, on the Web site www.leapfrog.com, and other online retailers from July 2005 through August 2006 for about $60.
Consumers should immediately take the recalled activity center away from children and contact LeapFrog for a free repair kit.

Finally this week, Atico International USA Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 27,700 9-foot patio umbrellas.
The umbrella poles contain paint with excessive levels of lead, which can cause adverse health effects if ingested by young children.
No incidents or injuries have been reported.
These patio umbrellas were sold in Tan, Red, Green, and Navy Blue.
There were sold at Longs Drug Stores nationwide from April 2006 through May 2006 for about $40.
Consumers should stop using these umbrellas immediately and return it to the retailer for a full refund.
