Welcome to CPSC’s Podcast for Friday, August 10, 2007. I’m Patty Davis.
[Patty:] CPSC is alerting consumers to a major recall. Toy maker Fisher Price recently recalled about 967,000 Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer and other children’s toys. Joining me is Scott Wolfson, CPSC’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs. Welcome Scott.
[Scott:] Thank you very much.
[Patty:] Why should consumers be concerned with this recall?
[Scott:] This is an issue where lead paint on toys has been banned for nearly 30 years. And these toys are not just affected. They are banned hazardous substances. Anything with lead and being exposed to children is a serious concern to us.
[Patty:] This recall involves about 83 different licensed character toys. What should you look for to determine if you have one of the recall toys?
[Scott:] This is really a tough one for parents. They should come to either our Web site or to Fisher Price’s. Take a look to see what the product number is first and then check out the date code. This is an issue where they are only sold from May to August of this year. So you really need to confirm whether you have the right date code.
[Patty:] If your toy has a date code that is outside that range what should you do?
[Scott:] These models are not involved in the recall, but if parents are concerned they should still call Fisher Price. Again, this is only for those models sold from May until August of this year.
[Patty:] Now where should you call if you have one of these toys?
[Scott:] Fisher Price has a hotline of 1-800-916-4498. It’s open anytime. CPSC also has a hotline and it is there to help you. And it’s 1-800-638-2772.
[Patty:] Once you call Fisher Price what will you get in return?
[Scott:] What you’ll need to do is return the toy back to Fisher Price. In turn, they will give you is a voucher of equal value so that you can get new toy that’s safe for you kids to play with.
[Patty:] All right. Thanks Scott. There were other recalls that were announced by CPSC this week. Here are the headlines:
