Welcome to CPSC’s Podcast for Friday, July 27, 2007. I’m Patty Davis. Today we’re doing a roundup of this week’s product recalls. With me to discuss the recalls -- CPSC’s Ed Kang, Nikki Fleming and Arlene Flecha.
[Patty:] We’re going to start with a very large recall this week: Toro Company Recalled About 900,000 Electric Blowers. Nikki, what’s the problem with these blowers?
[Nikki:] The blower’s impeller which is the rotating component on the blower can actually break into pieces and project flying pieces at consumers.
[Patty:] These are older blowers, is that right?
[Nikki:] Yes, they were sold from January 2000 through late December 2002.
[Patty:] And what should consumers do if they look in their garage and they find one of these blowers?
[Nikki:] They want to stop using the product immediately and contact Toro and receive a free replacement blower. The toll free number for Toro is (888) 279-3191.
[Patty:] CPSC announced another big recall – this time for more than 400,000 Television stands. Ed, can you tell us about this recall?
[Ed:] Sure Patty. These stands were made by Sauder Woodworking and the TV stand can collapse if the fasteners used to connect the legs to the lower shelf aren’t completely tightened. The TV stand can actually collapse. The company has had three reports of injuries, a broken arm, a torn rotator cuff and an injured finger. So consumers do need to be very careful with this and call Sauder if they have any problems at (866) 218-8312.
[Patty:] You probably want to check your child’s crib for this next recall. Arlene what do these recalled bumpers for cribs look like?
[Arlene:] First of all, these recalled bumpers are being recalled by Pottery Barn Kids. And they come in several solid colors, floral and polka dot patterns. And they’re also quilted. The most important things parents need to know is that these bumpers have a decorative stitching on the bumpers that can come loose and pose an entanglement hazard for children. It’s very important for parents to stop using these bumpers immediately and remove any exposed stitching. And also they can contact Pottery Barn Kids for a refund at (877) 800-9720.
[Patty:] When were they sold and for how much?
[Arlene:] Yes, they were sold between February 2003 and June 2007 for about $90.
[Patty:] CPSC also recalled log splitters this week. Brave Products recalled about 8,000 log splitters. This was an expansion of an earlier recall. There have been about 59 additional incidents. One consumer reported a hand amputation that could have been caused by the cylinder defect with the recalled log splitter. If you have one of these, call Brave Products at (800) 350-8739.
[Patty:] There were other recalls that were announced by CPSC this week as well. Here are the headlines: Pacifiers that are decorated with crystals were recalled due to aspiration and ingestion hazards Reclining lounge chairs sold at Menards Stores were recalled for a collapsing hazard And -- A risk of explosion and hearing damage prompted the recall of Sky Rangers Park Flyer Radio Controlled Airplanes.
[Patty:] You can find out more about these and other recalls at our Web site – www.cpsc.gov.
[Ed:] The easiest for consumers to do is to go to cpsc.gov and sign up for free recall email notification. They don’t have to go to the Web site, the notifications will come to them. As soon as we know about a recall, they’ll know about a recall.
[Patty:] Alright. Thanks. That’s it for this week’s podcast. Thanks for tuning in.
End.
