Welcome to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Podcast for April 28, 2006.
April is National Gardening Month, and CPSC is wants consumers to remember Safety when working in the Yard and Garden this Spring and Summer.
In recall news this week, Selected Trading Corp. announced the recall of about 55,000 children’s necklaces that contain high levels of lead. They pose a serious risk of lead poisoning and adverse health effects to young children.
There have been no reports of injuries or incidents with these necklaces.
The recalled choker-style necklaces are silver-colored hearts, crosses and clovers that hang from a blue, maroon or black velvety cord. The jewelry’s packaging is white cardboard with “In Style” printed on the front. They were sold at Dollar General Stores from January 2003 through December 2005 for about $1.
Consumers should immediately return the recalled jewelry to the nearest Dollar General Store for a refund.
For additional information, contact Dollar General at (800) 336-6292.
Also this week, CPSC announced two exercise-related recalls.
The first is about 48,000 Hoist Exercise Benches that have a Finger Entrapment Hazard
These Hoist Fitness Systems Inc. benches’ front frame assembly (with the foot rest) can fail to lock into place. Consumers who grab the bench to position themselves can get their fingers entrapped. This poses laceration and amputation hazards.
Hoist has received two reports of injuries, a hand laceration and a partially amputated finger.
The recall includes the Hoist “5 Position Fold-Up Bench,” “Folding Flat Bench,” and “Folding Ab-Crunch Bench”.
Consumers should contact Hoist Fitness to see if their bench’s serial number is included in this recall. If it is, stop using the recalled exercise bench and arrange to receive a free repair kit. Consumers who own the Hoist “Folding Flat Bench” should contact Hoist to return the bench for a full refund.

Finally this week, Sycamore Kids Inc. announced another expansion of the recall of their Mountain Buggy Jogging Strollers
The recall involves about 4,000 Mountain Buggy Urban Single and Urban Double, Breeze Strollers
The handlebar on these strollers can crack or break causing it to detach while in use, posing a risk of injury to young children.
This is an expansion of the Sycamore Kids Inc. jogging strollers recalls announced July 2005 and November 2005 and involves units previously repaired under earlier recalls.
Sycamore Kids has received 49 reports of the handlebars either cracking or breaking when the stroller was pulled up or taken down stairs. This resulted in five reports of bruises and scrapes.
A metal plate above the footrest on these strollers shows the Mountain Buggy logo with “Mountain Buggy,” and “Urban,” or “Breeze” written underneath on the metal plate.
For additional information, contact Sycamore Kids at (866) 524-8805. If your stroller is included in the recall they will help you find an authorized repair center to receive a free replacement handlebar ratchet.
