Welcome to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Podcast for April 7, 2006.
CPSC and Stamina Products Inc. announced this week the recall of about 668,000 InMotion Mini-Trampolines sold at Wal-Mart, Play it Again Sports and other retailers since August 2000.
If a person assembles the trampoline alone and the outside rail is released momentarily, the trampoline can snap back into the folded position and strike the consumer, posing a risk of serious injury.
Stamina has received 13 reports of injuries including two concussions; a corneal abrasion; a rotated disc; facial bone fractures; injuries requiring stitches; and chipped teeth.
The mini-trampoline is used for in-place jogging and other cardiovascular exercises. They are round, black, and measure 36 inches across. A label on one of the legs contains the name “Stamina.” Check with the firm to see if you trampoline is included in this recall.
Consumers should not assemble or disassemble the recalled mini-trampolines until they have the revised assembly instructions. Consumers should contact Stamina at (800) 375-7520 for new assembly instructions.
In other recall news this week, Tecumseh Power Co. is recalling about 170,000 engines used in generators, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, log splitters, fun karts and other products.
The fuel line on these engines can become loose or disconnected, resulting in a fuel leak. This can pose a fire hazard to consumers.
Tecumseh has received 235 reports of disconnected fuel lines, including two reports of a fire. There have been no reports of injury. The firm has received 39 reports of minor damage, totaling about $44,000.
The recall includes Toro lawnmowers, Ariens’ weed trimmers, and Coleman Powermate and NorthStar generators. For a complete list of the power equipment and the brand names they were sold under, go to the firm’s Web site at www.TecumsehPower.com. Consumers should stop using their recalled equipment until they receive a free inspection and possible repair if necessary. For more information, call Tecumseh toll-free at (888) 271-4048.
Also this week, Brookstone Company Inc. is recalling more than 35,000 Massaging Bed Rests. Electrical circuits within the bed rest can overheat causing the back side of the product to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard.
Brookstone has received two reports of overheating, melting and charring, resulting in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.
The recalled bed rest is designed to support a person sitting in bed. It is beige and has foldable armrests with a cup holder and massage controls, and a headrest with a reading light attached. “Imported by Brookstone Company” is printed on a tag attached to the bed rest. They were sold by Brookstone, and on the Web from April 2004 through January 2006 for about $125.
Consumers should stop using the recalled bed rest immediately and contact Brookstone toll-free at (888) 318-7455 or on the firm’s Web site at www.brookstone.com to get a free replacement bed rest.
