FIRE SAFETY
- The holidays often mean that mom or dad will use candles to decorate the house or light a fire in the fireplace. Leave that up to adults. Never, ever play near a candle, fireplace or stove.
- Never play with matches or lighters and keep them away from younger brothers and sisters or other little kids.
- The holidays are a good time to make sure your family has a fire escape plan.
- Map out routes of escape for every member of your family.
- Map out an alternative route in case the others are blocked by a fire.
- Practice your plan every couple of months or so.
- Establish at least two exits from each part of the house.
- Include a place safely away from the house for your family to meet to make sure everyone got out O.K.
- Make sure the smoke detectors in your house are working.
The holidays are a good time to remind your mom or dad to check your smoke detectors and replace the batteries. Make sure there is a smoke detector on each floor of your house and that they are placed near bedrooms so you'll be able to hear them if they go off at night.
