Freedom of Information Act

Note: CPSC is processing most FOIA requests electronically during this time. FOIA requests and appeals submitted via US mail or courier, and any FOIA records requiring physical delivery will be delayed. Read more important COVID-19 FOIA information.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. §552, requires federal agencies to disclose releasable records or to withhold exempt records or information in response to a written request. Agencies may withhold records if the records are protected from disclosure by one of nine specific FOIA exemptions. For more information about obtaining publicly available records from CPSC see our Guide to Public Information.
