Building successful partnerships with regulated industries has led to the success of CPSC's "product safety triangle" -- government, industry, consumers: working together. This is the foundation of CPSC's effective efforts in saving lives and preventing injuries. These partnerships provide incentives to industry to produce innovative advances in product safety well beyond what the law requires.
For business, the smart "bottom line" includes a margin of safety in all its products because today safety sells. The Commission brought together corporate leaders and senior business executives at a "Safety Sells" conference to talk about business profitability and product safety and mutual objectives. The conference resulted in a major international conference on harmonizing product safety standards, and several other partnerships.
More recently, CPSC launched a national program of local Baby Safety Showers to help parents learn how to protect their children from injuries and deaths at home. Modeled on the traditional shower party, baby safety showers feature home safety tips and safety-related games and gifts. Several Members of Congress and state governors have expressed an interest in the program.
Other success stories include a partnership with other agencies and organizations to prevent infant suffocation from soft bedding through a public health campaign and a program with the U.S. Customs Service to prevent substandard or defective products from entering the United States.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission protects the public from the
unreasonable risk of injury or death from 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency's
jurisdiction.
